Nuggets win two in tourney play

The Nuggets lived up to their No. 1 seeding in the city’s Junior

Basketball League tournament by advancing to the postseason event’s

championship game.

Their two victims at Laguna Beach High’s Dugger Gymnasium were the

White Uniforms, 72-54, and the Trojans, 83-52, the latter coming in

the finals of the winner’s bracket.

League scoring leader continued his torrid pace by scoring 90

points in the two victories.

He netted 40 against the White Uniforms before posting a career

high of 50 points against the Trojans, who were considered the

favorites early in the season.

The Trojans played the late stages of the season without key

player Nick Witte, who was sidelined by a leg injury.

In the two games, Morrison made five, three-point shots and hit 15

of 21 free throw attempts.

In the two wins, Christian Kesler and Jeffrey Chan scored 24 and

22 points, respectively.

Dylan Roley, the league’s leading three-point shooter, hit five

treys en route to 21 points to lead the White Uniforms in scoring.

Bryce Healey and Dylan McDonald each scored 14 points for the

Trojans.

The Nuggets will face the sixth-seeded Kings in the title game.

The Kings qualified for the postseason final by bouncing back from

a 69=57 loss to the third-seeded Trojans to win four straight games

in loser’s bracket play.

The Tartans, who won the regular season championship with a 10-0

record, are not participating in the postseason tournament.

In other playoff games:

Kings 77, Lakers 61

Matthew Ininns, who missed the previous nine games due to an arm

injury, returned to action and scored a team-high 25 points to lead

the Kings past the Lakers.

The Kings outscored the Lakers, 34-11, over the final two

quarters, to wipe out a 43-38 deficit.

Jason House scored 23 points and Jack Monroe, who hit a trio of

three-point shots, contributed 16 more for the Kings.

Alex Vasquez’s 28 points led all scorers and Armand Begay add 21

points for the Lakers.

Kings 81, White Uniforms 60

Jack Monroe ripped the nets for 27 points as he Kings dropped the

White Uniforms into the loser’s bracket.

Monroe scored 15 of his 27 points on five three-pointers.

Four other Kings scored in double figures, including Jason House

with 16 points, Matthew Ininns with 11 and Erik Vasquez with 10.

Dylan Roley hit five, three-point baskets and led all scorers with

35 points, and his brother, Brooke, scored 11 to lead the White

Uniforms.

Kings 69, Artists 62

Jack Monroe again led the Kings’ charge with 25 points as they won

in loser’s bracket play.

Matthew Ininns scored 11 points and Russ Carter scored nine for

the Kings.

Warren Murrell scored 19 points, Parker King had 15 points and

Jonathan Norris scored 12 points to lead the Artists in scoring.

Kings 92, Trojans 52

The Kings saved their biggest scoring explosion of the season for

the final game of the loser’s bracket, where they ripped the Trojans.

Jack Monroe scored 32 points, Matthew Ininns scored 20 more and

Jason House added 17 points.

Dylan McDonald connected on four, three-point shots en route to 20

points, Bryce Healey scored 13 and Lance Knapp scored 11 for the

Trojans.

Artists 67, White Uniforms 57

Kevin Buck’s 27 points, which included a trio of three-point

baskets, helped put the Artists into the tournament’s third-place

game with the Trojans.

Warren Murrell was right behind Buck with 22 points and Parker

King chipped in 10 points.

The trio scored all but eight of the Artists’ 67 points.

Dylan Roley continued his prolific scoring by netting 27 points,

12 of them coming on four, three-point baskets.

White Uniforms 61, Lakers 53

In an elimination game, Dylan Roley connected on five, three-point

baskets and finished with a game-best 35 points, as the White

Uniforms stayed alive in postseason play.

Austin Hyden added 11 points to the White Uniforms’ cause.

Alex Vasquez scored 34 points in his final game to lead the

Lakers.
