Rangers’ Michael Young asks for a trade

Michael Young has asked the Texas Rangers to trade him. General Manager Jon Daniels says the American League champions are willing to accommodate that request, though “nothing is imminent.”

Daniels said Monday that the Rangers will trade their career hits leader only if such a deal would improve the team.

After signing free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre last month, the Rangers said they expected Young to become the primary designated hitter and serve in a utility role where he could fill in at every infield position.

Young initially agreed, but Daniels says Young has since had a “change of heart” about those plans.

Young, a .300 hitter going into his 11th season, is the Rangers’ longest-tenured player.

The Dodgers signed infielder Aaron Miles to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.

Miles batted .281 in 79 games with St. Louis last season after his contract was purchased from double-A Springfield (Mo.) in June. He was one of the final players cut by Cincinnati last spring.

A person familiar with the negotiations says third baseman Eric Chavez and the New York Yankees have agreed to a minor league contract.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.

Blake wins in comeback match

James Blake won his first competitive match since October, beating qualifier Jesse Levine, 7-5, 6-1, in the first round of the SAP Open at San Jose.

Blake had not played since losing to Lukasz Kubot in the first round in Vienna in October because of shoulder and knee injuries. Blake, a 10-time winner on tour who was once ranked as high as fourth in the world, has fallen to 170th in the latest rankings.

Wyoming fired men’s basketball Coach Heath Schroyer.

Schroyer compiled a 49-68 record over the 31/2 seasons he was coach. His best season was 2008-09, when the team was 19-14.

Athletic Director Tom Burman says associate head coach Fred Langley will serve as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Oklahoma State suspended starting forward Darrell Williams after he was charged with four felony counts alleging he inappropriately touched two women without their consent.

Williams, 21, made a brief court appearance after he was charged with one count of sexual battery and three counts of rape by instrumentation.

Coach Travis Ford said Williams won’t play or travel with the team while his legal issues are being addressed.

The return date for Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, who has already sat out 13 games because of a concussion, is still unknown, Coach Dan Bylsma said.

Boston Bruins center Marc Savard will sit out the rest of the season after he was put on long-term injured reserve because of his second concussion in less than a year.
