No nerves for Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly now

Don Mattingly said he was nervous earlier in the week when addressing his team for the first time on its first day of full-squad workouts.

He said he doesn’t feel the same about managing his first Cactus League game of the spring.

“About opening spring training day?” the rookie manager asked. “No, I’m not nervous.”

The Dodgers will open the exhibition season with a pair of split-squad games. Mattingly will manage the team that will face the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale; triple-A Albuquerque Manager Lorenzo Bundy will be in charge of the group that will take on the Angels in Tempe.

Bench coach Trey Hillman and third base coach Tim Wallach will go with Mattingly, while first base coach Davey Lopes and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt will be alongside Bundy.

More than a week into spring training, Mattingly said the newness of his job is starting to wear off and that he is becoming increasingly comfortable in his new role. He compared the experience to managing in the Arizona Fall League.

“You’ve got a new group of guys, you’re trying to get across, you’ve got a whole new different set of responsibilities,” Mattingly said. “At first, I’ve got all this stuff. After four, five days, the routine becomes part of it.”

Torre moves on

Former manager Joe Torre was offered a chance to remain with the Dodgers as an advisor but has decided to work for the commissioner instead.

Torre, 70, will be named vice president of baseball operations on Saturday at a news conference in Scottsdale. In his new job, Torre will oversee baseball’s on-field operations.

Big day at the ballpark

If you visit Dodger Stadium on Saturday morning, you can buy tickets using a credit card, then find a job to pay off your debt.

The Dodgers will begin selling single-game tickets at 10 a.m. at the ballpark, online at dodgers.com, or by phone at 866-DODGERS.

An undisclosed number of single-game tickets for opening day will be available for sale only at the ballpark. Starting at 8 a.m., the Dodgers will hand out numbered wristbands. An hour later, a lottery will be held and the fan with the selected wristband number will get to be first in line to buy tickets. The rest of the fans will be served in numerical order.

The team will also be host of a job fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with more than 100 companies expected to attend.
