London: Afghanistan art and antiquities at British Museum
- Share via
The British Museum in London next month will open a major exhibition of art and antiquities from the National Museum of Afghanistan, supplemented by objects from its own collection.
Hidden by officials of the Kabul museum during the Soviet invasion in 1979, many of the objects are survivors of a collection that was looted and partially destroyed under the Taliban. The exhibit showcases more than 200 objects, including Buddhist sculptures, Roman enameled glass, Indian ivories and spectacular pieces of gold jewelry.
These works demonstrate Afghanistan’s historic trade links across two continents and its importance to the commerce of the fabled Silk Road.
“Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World” will run March 3 through July 3.
