Milwaukee: Harley-Davidson revs up motorcycle camps

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

Most summer camps are for children. But Camp H-D is a summer camp for big kids -- and big bikes. The Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee is hosting five-day motorcycle camps in 2011 to give riders (and riders-to-be) a chance to immerse themselves in the culture of twin-cylinder two-wheelers and the Midwestern city that has been building them for more than a century.

Costing $3,000 per person, each of the three camps includes a night out in Milwaukee and, of course, saddle time on a hog. Each camp is limited to 20 participants. Here’s the schedule:

* Biker Boot Camp for Women (May 9-14) includes rider training, a visit to the Harley-Davidson Museum to learn about the history of female riders, entry to a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game and a night out on the town.

* Harley-Davidson Fantasy Camp (June 27-July 1) includes a city tour, a brewery visit, a group ride and a meet-and-greet with Harley executives, among other activities.

*Speed Camp (July 6-11) gives riders a tour of Harley’s Pilgrim Road plant before they ride to Joliet, Ill., and attend NHRA drag races.

“These camps are really about catering to our customers and providing experiences,” said Bill Davidson, great-grandson of Harley-Davidson co-founder William A. Davidson and vice president of the Harley-Davidson Museum. “Camp H-D allows us to show them our rich heritage.”

All camps include hotel, transportation to all camp destinations, food, admissions and access to planned activities. Registration for Camp H-D revved up Feb. 15.
