Palm Desert: Wildflower Festival getting ready to bloom

Hike along a desert trail, shoot photos of wildflowers, learn how to landscape with native plants and more next week, when the annual Wildflower Festival kicks off in Palm Desert. The festival, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 5, will take place on the grounds of the visitor center at Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.
The free event includes live music; an art show; guided hikes and walks; a Kids Zone with arts and crafts; wine tastings from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and workshops on landscaping and photography.
The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, includes more than 270,00 acres of desert and mountain terrain.
The festival helps kick off the wildflower season in the Coachella Valley, said Gretchen Gutierrez of the Friends of the Desert Mountains, the nonprofit support organization for the monument that organizes the festival.
